Why We Do What We Do
At the city, our mission is to create a thriving, vibrant community where residents can live, work, and play. As we embark on the creation of the 2025 Comprehensive Plan, we want to take the opportunity to reflect on the progress we've made since the 2020 Comprehensive Plan. Our community's input has been invaluable, and we are proud to highlight how we have delivered on the priorities and recommendations that residents have requested.
What is a Comprehensive Plan?
A Comprehensive Plan is a long-term vision for the city's growth and development. It outlines goals and strategies to guide decision-making and ensure that the community's needs and desires are met. The plan reflects the input of residents and stakeholders, making it a vital tool for shaping the future of Jersey Village.
How We Are Delivering Results
One of the key Priority Recommendations from the 2020 Comprehensive Plan was to "Update City Development and Building Codes." This recommendation aimed to simplify the process of new construction and promote development that aligns with the Comprehensive Plan.
This initiative was successfully achieved in two significant parts:
- New Zoning Ordinance (2023): In 2023, the city adopted a new zoning ordinance for residential and business districts. This ordinance is designed to keep appropriate uses in specific parts of the city, promoting uses that citizens have expressed a desire to see. By doing so, it helps maintain the character of different areas and ensures that development aligns with the community's vision. The zoning ordinance streamlines the development process and ensures that new projects conform to the city's long-term goals.
- Updated Building Codes (2024): In August 2024, the city adopted new building codes, including the 2024 Editions for the International Building Code (IBC), the International Fire Code (IFC), the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), the International Mechanical Code (IMC), the International Plumbing Code (IPC), the International Residential Code (IRC), the 2021 Edition of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and the 2023 Editions for the National Electrical Code (NEC). These updates are crucial for maintaining high standards of safety, efficiency, and sustainability in new constructions.
These updates reflect our commitment to fostering a development-friendly environment while ensuring that all new projects meet the highest standards of quality and safety. By simplifying the development process and updating our codes, we are delivering results and achieving the goals set out in the Comprehensive Plan.
We encourage all residents and developers to familiarize themselves with these new codes and ordinances.
We look forward to sharing more stories on 2020 Comprehensive Plan Priority Recommendations achievements and our ongoing efforts to enhance Jersey Village, making it an even better place to live, work, and play.
